I've never seen this style of manufactured packing before - there's some sort of synthetic ring enclosed in woven fabric. One fell apart and the other shows the internal ring in place through a damaged section of fabric.

The best and simplest packing I know of is Walkers Hornet packing. It's a PTFE and or Teflon based product and comes in a standard roll form.

Thanks Nigel. I'm thinking it may be a mistake not to upgrade to a good metallic packing assembly while we have the chance. Opinions?

Metallic packing won't be needed. That packing will last you years
